Android is a wonderfully open platform, with Marshmallow and Lollipop being excellent examples of how far the OS has developed. There's even more potential under the hood though, and our beginner's guide to rooting your phone or tablet shows you how to get the most from your Android device.

How to root Android: Summary

To root Android you'll need to enable Developer Mode and USB debugging on your device, then connect it to your PC. Free third-party software such as OneClickRoot can simplify rooting your Android phone or tablet, but alternatives are available. You can also root your phone or tablet without a PC using Stump Root. We'll explain all this in our guide to rooting Android below.

How to root Android: In-depth guide

One of the biggest advantages of the Android platform over its rivals is how users can customise devices to their personal tastes and requirements. The ultimate expression of this is rooting a phone. While Android is customisable, the layers of software that manufacturers often put on top of the OS can be limiting. Rooting is a way to get rid of this barrier, gain access to every aspect of the device, and take total control of your system. In this feature we’ll show you the basic principles of how to root a device running Marshmallow, Lollipop, or an older version of Android, and some of the pitfalls you need to avoid.

This is a beginner’s guide, so you don’t need to be a seasoned technician to achieve a rooted phone. There are some risks involved though, including the potential to make your phone totally unusable, so we recommend you read through the article in full before you consider heading down this path, and if possible practice on an old phone first. That being said, rooting a phone is actually quite straightforward and the benefits easily outweigh the risks for careful users.

How to root Android phone or tablet: What does rooting mean?

Rooting an Android device is the process of gaining privileged or full control of the operating system, and even the software that runs the operating system. The idea is to get root access hence why it is known as 'rooting'. It's a bit like having a VIP pass at a gig, you can go anywhere you like and do anything you want (within reason).
Rooting an Android smartphone or tablet is effectively the same as 'jailbreaking' an iPhone.

How to root Android phone or tablet: Why should I root my Android phone or tablet?

Android is a mature platform now, and the arguments for rooting that made sense a couple of years ago hold a little less water these days. Google has worked hard to refine the user experience, and the current iteration – 6.0 Marshmallow – is a clutter-free work of art that feels a long way from the dark days of Froyo and Gingerbread.(We've largely blanked those from our collective memory.)
The problems occur when phone manufacturers lay their own interfaces on top of it. Far from improving Android, they often make things slower, uglier and more confusing. Then there’s the mortal sin of pre-loaded apps, often duplicating the functionality of stock Google versions, and being impossible to remove.
Not only does this take valuable storage space away from the user, but it seems to suggest that this expensive device you’ve paid for doesn’t actually belong to you. If you want that kind of experience then a trip to the Apple Store is probably a good idea, and at least you’ll be able to sell the device for a decent amount of money when you decide to upgrade.
The good news is it doesn’t have to be this way. If you want to control every aspect of your device, choosing the access apps have to the web and the very interface itself, then rooting remains a solid option. The process is free, shouldn’t take too long, and in many cases is reversible.
Of course if you don’t want cumbersome pre-loaded software suites, then there is the more capitalistic approach of not buying a phone from a manufacturer that employs such tactics. Instead you can pick up one of the Nexus range from Google, which includes the Nexus 5X and its larger brother the Nexus 6P, or a Moto G, Moto X Play, or Moto X Style from Motorola, all of which arrive with a minimum of bloat.
But if you already have a differrent Android phone, or have your eye on one in particular, and just don’t aren't keen on the software, then rooting could let you build the device of your dreams. If you want a more in-depth look at the pros and cons of rooting your phone, check out our Why Root Android? feature.

How to root Android phone or tablet: Is rooting Android dangerous?

Rooting isn't a five-minute job. The decision needs a bit of thought. First, rooting your phone will absolutely void your warranty. Manufacturers don’t want you to do it, Google doesn’t want you to do it, and you won’t get any customer support if you run into problems…and you are likely to run into problems. The worst case scenario is you will brick your phone.
This doesn’t mean you grow so frustrated that you'll throw it against the wall - it simply describes the technological abilities your phone will possess if rooting goes wrong. Which is nothing at all. Hence, a brick.
Security becomes a more serious concern. Many of the reports you read about malicious attacks on Android users will most likely involve rooted devices, or certainly those running software not found on the Google Play Store. So it’s more risky than a standard setup.
But, and this is very important, if you do your research, are not afraid to learn how things work, and don’t mind spending time fixing software problems, rooting can be hugely liberating and give you a device that is truly your own. Just remember, backup anything important before you begin, preferably to a PC or cloud service.

How to root Android phone or tablet: Can anyone root Android?

Considering the risks involved with rooting our advice is that you should only do it on your device if you can survive if something goes wrong. If you already have doubts then it's probably best to leave things well alone. We said this was a beginner's guide - which it is - but that doesn't mean rooting is suitable for everyone.
If you're keen to learn about rooting, use - or buy - an old, cheap phone to practice on before moving up to your main device.

How to root Android phone or tablet: Rooting a device running Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Since its release in October 2015, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update has been slowly making its way out into the Android community. As it remains a relatively new version of Android, the number of phones actually running the software is still quite small. At the time of writing only a handful of the major manufacturers have released the Marshmallow update for their handsets so far, although we expect to see this increase rapidly throughout the next few months.
This absence means that there are very few options available for those who want to root their brand new devices. Our investigations only found solutions for Google’s own Nexus range of handsets and the LG G4.
All of these routes involve unlocking the bootloader, wiping devices, installing a new kernel, then installing a custom ROM, all of which is simpler than it sounds but would still be a challenge for many beginners.  For the moment we’d recommend holding off for a few months, as the hacking community is bound to produce tools that automate parts of the process, which would make it a little less intimidating.
As so much of rooting involves fixing issues by talking with others that have already worked through them, it’s a good idea to let more experienced hackers go before you and weed out any potential nasty bugs that could cause your phone problems. Remember, being one step ahead makes you a pioneer, being two steps ahead makes you a martyr.

How to root Android phone or tablet: How do I root Android? Step-by-step guide to rooting Android Lollipop or earlier versions

The first thing to know is that there isn’t a ‘root my phone’ button on your device. It’s also not entirely clear whether your particular handset can be rooted easily. So before you begin thinking about custom ROMs or root-enabled apps, you’ll need to research your specific Android phone or tablet.
A good search term is ‘[model name] how to root’. More often than not you’ll probably find a link to a website called XDA Developers, which is undoubtedly the best resource for this sort of thing. Here you may well discover that there are many variants of your handset, each with different identifying numbers and codes. European models tend to vary from their North American cousins, as do the ones from other parts of the world.
To find your exact unit go to Settings on your phone and navigate through General>About Phone, then check the Model number. On some Android variants you might find this in the Hardware Information option on the About Phone menu.
You’ll also want to know which flavour of Android you’re running, so visit Settings>General>About Phone, and check the Android version. Again some phone will have this under Software Information.
Another thing you’ll need to do before you can root your phone, no matter which method you use, it to turn on Developer mode. To do this go to Settings>General>About Phone,  then tap on the Build number several times until you see a message saying that you are now a developer. Then when you return to Settings>General you’ll see that Developer Options has appeared on your menu, tap this and ensure that USB debugging is turned on.
Armed with your handset model information you should be able to track down the method that exists to root your phone. While we were writing this guide we used an old LG G3 that we had in the office, and found a couple of different tools that were recommended. The most appealing was OneClickRoot, which is a website that promises a simple process for rooting a number of Android phones. You visit the site, find your phone, download the free software, then connect your phone to your PC and run the root process. There are a number of other downloadable Root tools to choose from, such as SuperOneClick, Unlock Root, Z4Root and Universal AndRoot, but you'll need to check if your device is supported.
The potential hazards of trying to root a phone showed up straight away for us, as the OneClickRoot method didn't actually work. Our phone appeared on the list, it matched the model number, but when we tried to root a message appeared saying our device wasn’t eligible yet, but would hopefully be added in the future. There was a chat option, but we decided to carry on our search. We tried another piece of software that was recommended on several sites, but this time the program wouldn’t actually run on our PC, even after several attempts and multiple copies being downloaded.
We mention this because the path to rootedness can be filled with this sort of frustration. It’s very much a community effort, run by enthusiasts, and therefore you can expect to spend lots of time on forums if things don’t turn out as you’d hoped. Of course, you might try any of the above and find it works first time, which would have been our experience if we’d started with Stump Root.

How to root Android phone or tablet: Using Stump Root

This clever bit of software actually allows you to root your phone without the need of a PC. First you need to go to stumproot.org where you tap on the option to Download Stump root V1.2.0. Once this is done open the app drawer on your phone, find the File Manager and navigate to your downloads folder. You’ll see the Stump-v1.2.0 apk, which you tap to install. Google presents a very scary ‘don’t use this app as it bypasses security’ message, but this is normal for rooting a device. Install the app, then on the main screen hit tap the Grind button and Stump Root will automatically root your phone. Now all that needs to be done is to reboot and you’re good to go.

How to root Android phone or tablet: Is my phone rooted? How do I know if my phone is rooted?

When you first turn on a rooted phone there isn’t much to differentiate it from an unrooted one. A quick way to make sure is to download the free Root Checker app from the Google Play Store. Just tap the Check button in the top right hand corner of the installed app, and it will do a short scan of your system and confirm whether you have Root Access or not.
Many Chinese phones come pre-rooted, for example.

How to root Android phone or tablet: Why do people root Android?

One of the first apps to download from the Google Play Store is SuperSU, which allows you to control the permissions that root apps have, alongside a variety of other settings. Depending on how you rooted your device, SuperSU might already have been installed, or you might find an alternative called KingRoot on your system which does many of the same things.
There are some very useful apps that require root access, and now you can use any of these on your phone. If you really want to gain complete governance over your system then Device Control is an excellent app that has options for a whole manner of deep settings such as speed limits on your CPU, internal temperature controls, and the Tasker which allows you to create rules for how your phone behaves in different circumstances. This last one is incredibly useful, but can be intimidating to make sense of at first. We recommend searching for a few tutorials online, and before you know it you’ll be whizzing around the interface. Device Control requires another app, Busybox, to work properly, but you’ll be taken to the right place to install it when needed.
Backing up your phone is another very handy feature, and this can be achieved by downloading Titanium Backup app from the Google Play Store. Once installed you can use Titanium to make backups of your user data, applications, or both. To do your first full backup tap on the Backup/Restore tab at the top of the app, then tap Menu>Batch action>Backup all user apps + system data, then tap the green tick.

If you want to fine tune your system and customise its behaviour even further, but don’t fancy heading down the more nuclear Custom ROM route, then the Xposed Framework offers many of the advantages of custom ROMs, but without the hassle. It’s not a standard app you’ll find in the Google Play Store, so you’ll need to search for it online - just go to the XDA Developers site - then install it, and download some of the many tweak packs that actually do the adjusting. Popular options include Tweakbox, and the MoDaCo Toolkit.

How to root Android phone or tablet: How to install Custom ROMs to Android

One of the main reasons many people root their phones is to install custom ROMs. These are replacements for the operating system on the devices, and are often updated versions of Android that the manufacturers haven’t made available. The most famous ROMs are Cyanogenmod and Paranoid Android, both of which offer excellent alternatives to the bloat heavy offerings of many mainstream Android flavours. Installing a custom ROM is another risky venture, which should again only be undertaken with the knowledge that problems could occur. Non optimised ROMs could cause hardware issues, drain the battery quicker, and mean some apps don’t work properly anymore.  Then of course there’s that old ‘brick’ issue.
Usually before you install a custom ROM you’ll need to create a Custom Recovery. This will allow the device to make a backup of your system, install ROMs, and provide a way to get going again if things go wrong. The most common types are Standard Recovery (this is a part of every Android phone), ClockworkMod (CWM) and Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
Apps such as TWRP Manager, ROM Installer and ROM Manager have the ability to create these Custom Recovery features, and they also provide a way of downloading ROMs and installing them on your device. As flashing a custom ROM can be a fairly tricky business, you will certainly need to visit sites like XDA Developers or the excellent Cyanogenmod, where you can search for the detailed steps that you will need to follow in order to flash the Custom ROM. It’s extremely important that you follow the steps to the letter, and read them several times before you begin. Otherwise you can quickly end up with an expensive paperweight on your desk.
We used TWRP Manager to install a dedicated ROM on our LG G3 that we downloaded from the CyanogenMod site.
The sequence for installing custom ROMs is essentially this
  • Root your phone
  • Find the version of the ROM for your specific device and download it to your phone
  • Download TWRP Manager or another ROM manager app
  • Use the ROM manager to create a Custom Recovery
  • Backup your existing ROM and data
  • Use the ROM manager to boot into recovery mode
  • Wipe the existing ROM
  • Flash the new ROM
  • Reboot your device
Creating a backup of your existing ROM means that if you don’t like the new one you install, or you want to put your phone back to its original state, you can use a ROM manager to restore the backup.
One thing to consider is that CyanogenMod and other ROMs don’t come with the Google Play Store as standard, and you’ll need to visit the CyanogenMod or relevant ROM builder’s site to find instructions for installing the service. It isn’t difficult, certainly not now that you’ve gotten this far, but it still involves downloading software and using the Recovery mode to install it on your system.

How to unroot Android phone or tablet: Return to factory settings

If you’ve finished experimenting with ROMs and Root access, then there is a simple was to take your phone back to the way it was when you began. Open up the SuperSU app, go to Settings and then select the Full Unroot option. Hopefully now your device will return to its unrooted status.
If this doesn’t work then you can still unroot your phone, but it will involve researching your particular handset and maybe asking a few questions on the XDA Developers forums. They’re a friendly bunch though, so it’s not a bad way to spend some time.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is like an open-world, playable Game of Thrones

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is like an open-world, playable Game of Thrones

Grand Theft Westeros

In the first two minutes of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt you witness a horse being decapitated and a crow spear itself through a man's eye. A few moments later you see a naked couple taking a bath together. This is a game that really wants you to know that it is dark, mature fantasy, and it wastes no time telling you that.
The latest entry in the Polish role playing series is essentially what would happen if you mashed up Game of Thrones and Grand Theft Auto. It takes place in a gritty fantasy realm beleaguered by horrific happenings. Not unlike Westeros, here is a place where magic and monsters exist alongside people. Characters die in brutal ways, and seemingly every story has a tragic element. The Witcher 3 is also an open-world game, a huge virtual playground where you can go practically anywhere and tackle things however you like. If the main story doesn't interest you, simply wander off and hunt some monsters in the woods or investigate murders in a bustling medieval town.
But no matter what you choose, you're going to have some fun.
Wild Hunt once again stars series hero Geralt, who comes from a line of supernaturally powerful monster hunters called witchers. He's basically a genetically engineered problem solver: he travels the world aiding everyone, from kings to peasants, armed with magic spells, superhuman strength, and the ability to track like a bloodhound. Think of him as a work-for-hire Jedi who doesn't mind slicing people up with his giant swords. (He carries two — a silver one for monsters and a steel one for regular folk.) Wild Hunt sees Geralt on a quest to find Ciri, his former student, who is being chased by a mysterious, powerful group called The Hunt, for reasons that aren't exactly clear. Over the course of the game, he finds himself constantly one step behind his protÊgÊ and her pursuers, venturing from bustling cities to frigid, haunted islands.
There's a lot going on in the game, as this all happens against the backdrop of a war and a prophecy that the appearance of The Hunt signifies the end of days. There are two previous games and multiple books' worth of backstory and lore, but even still Wild Hunt is remarkably welcoming to new players — don't let that three in the title fool you. I've never played a Witcher game before, and I was able to ease into the world with little problem. There are plenty of optional ways to catch up, whether it's the in-game encyclopedia or just conversations with other characters. But you don't have to do any of this: the core story is simple enough to understand even if you have no knowledge of the game's universe. You might not know every name mentioned, but you'll get by just fine.
Part of this has to do with the way the game is structured. Instead of one giant, epic quest, Wild Hunt feels more like a collection of short stories. Each quest is like its own self-contained thing that also, usually, connects back to the main story. Like in every other RPG, everyone you'll encounter wants something from you, whether it's the mage who can't perform a spell until you find his lost goat, or the townsfolk who won't give you any information until you kill that pesky, hen-eating werewolf. But Wild Hunt feels different because virtually every quest has a fascinating story nested within its objective. You're still doing relatively straightforward things like killing monsters and tracking down thieves, but they always feel like more than simple fetch quests.
Part of the reason is the top-level storytelling, which, much like Game of Thrones, constantly keeps you on edge with its brutality. Even the simplest-sounding quest will have elements of death or betrayal, and even though I eventually learned that bad things would happen basically all the time, these scenes still managed to catch me off guard. In one of the early villages I encountered, for example, a woman asked me to help her find her missing frying pan. I found two corpses while getting it back. And that's just a basic quest, as things get much more brutal from there. There's even a scene that can only be described as the Red Wedding with bears, and it's just as awful as that sounds. Luckily, the drama also lets up every now and then, with some refreshing doses of self-aware humor. While this is a world where corpses hang from trees and stillborn babies can turn into monsters, it's also one where you can have awkward sex with a sorceress on top of a stuffed unicorn.
These quests also feel incredibly dynamic. While there is a main storyline to follow, and plenty of side quests that you can seek out by visiting local message boards, the most interesting moments in Wild Hunt are when you find yourself unexpectedly pulled into a brand new story. Just in the course of riding my horse from one town to the next I stumbled across wagons being attacked by monsters, young children orphaned by the war, and even a feeble, dragon-like creature trapped in a cage. I didn't go looking for any of these moments, but they kept presenting themselves, and almost every single one ended up being an engrossing tale that pulled me away from the core story. (They're also mostly optional.) For me, side quests in RPGs are usually just a tool to earn some gold and experience, and I don't think about them much beyond that. But in Wild Hunt, I welcomed them. Every time I started up the game, I was excited about seeing something new or funny or sad.
In fact, the only place the game really stumbled is toward the end, when the focus shifted to the main story of finding Ciri and confronting her attackers, and moves away from the smaller tales. There are some touching, important moments to be found, but the whole thing is drawn out for way too long and just becomes exhausting. Several times I thought the story had reached its climax only to realize there were still multiple hours left to go. In fact, what could be described as the last chapter of Wild Hunt is longer than some entire games.
This is obviously a huge game, but unlike a lot of open worlds, it's also one that feels lively. The developers at CD Projekt Red have spent a lot of time ensuring that it's not just a collection of towns connected by empty space. Even outside of the quests I stumbled across, there was a lot to do out in the world, whether hunting monsters or exploring ancient ruins. The game is so beautiful and so full of surprises, that I rode my horse most places instead of using the fast travel option that lets you zip around the map. I didn't want to miss anything. I absolutely loved just trotting around, watching the sun set and rise over the mountains, lakes, or wherever I happened to be at that moment. It's a nice palette cleanser after dismembering some ghouls in a bloody swordfight.
Of course, like most modern open-world games — whether it's Dragon Age Inquisition or Assassin's Creed Unity — this freedom comes at a price. Wild Hunt isn't the worst offender, but I still ran into plenty of glitches and bugs over the course of my playthrough. Some were just visual, like the jittery goat that was stuck in the background of an otherwise heartfelt cut-scene, or the corpses of slaughtered sirens that would float in mid-air at the edge of a cliff. But others actually made it hard to progress in the game. At one point I was battling a wraith, which would dive into the ground and then pop out for a surprise attack. Problem was, halfway through the fight it decided it no longer wanted to pop out again. Since I need to kill it to fulfill a contract, this meant that I had no choice but to abandon the quest and restart.
I was actually very intimidated when I first started playing Wild Hunt. Not only was I unfamiliar with the franchise, but the developers have said that it can take upwards of 100 hours to complete, depending on how deep you want to dig. That's just a huge number; I love RPGs, but I don't have a few dozen hours to spare. I managed to finish the game in somewhere between 30 and 40 hours, and I don't really feel like I missed out on anything. There was plenty of stuff I avoided — I didn't spend much time on alchemy or crafting, and there's a trading card game I skipped completely — but I’m still entirely satisfied by the experience. The fact that The Witcher 3 feels like a collection of quests rather than one huge epic makes it easier to pick and choose what you want to do, without a terrible case of FOMO.
In fact, I’ve made sure to keep a save file from before the end game kicks in. I don’t need to experience this lengthy game again, but already I can feel the urge to go for a quick horse ride through the forests in the north. The only thing I don’t know is what I’ll find when I get there.

Fallout 4 review: War never changes, and that's just fine

Fallout 4 review: War never changes, and that's just fine

There’s nothing quite like listening to “Crazy He Calls Me” as the sun rises over an abandoned highway. A radioactive scorpion could attack at any moment, sure, but when Billie Holiday is in your ears, the end of the world doesn’t seem so bad.
The Fallout games are collision points of two disparate forces. On one hand, you have a role-playing game set during a horrific future in which nuclear war has decimated the population, forcing humans to become scavengers, fighting to survive alongside mutants and monsters. On the other hand, there’s hope. Hope comes from trying to not just live in this awful place, but thrive. Hope resides in Fallout’s 1950’s retro-futurism, an alternate timeline where humankind was on the precipice of a technological revolution that would improve life across the planet — only to be squashed by warheads. War never changes, and hope never really disappears.
Fallout 4, the latest game in the series and the first since New Vegas in 2010, shows off this duality more than any predecessor. Fundamentally, it’s not that different from Fallout 3, the game that transformed the series from an isometric RPG to a first-person shooter / role-playing hybrid. Fallout 4 still takes place in a huge open world, provides you with an incredible amount of freedom with which to customize your character, and throws you into dangerous scenarios cast with immoral baddies. The game also features the series’ infamous technical problems, with frustrating glitches and bugs that often pull you out of the experience at best, and at worst, lose hard-won progress.
But all of that — the world, the characters, even the bugs — are table setting at this point. What Fallout 4 adds to the series is heart. For the first time I really cared about what happened in the story, and found myself struggling with its moral dilemmas. I still spent dozens of hours tweaking my guns and killing feral ghouls, but this time, it felt like I was doing it for a reason.
Fallout 4 actually starts before the war. You play as a civilian turned vault dweller, literally frozen in time via cryogenic stasis, only to awaken hundreds of years later in this terrible future. At the outset, you have only one goal: find your kidnapped son. This directive pulls you across the entirety of post-war Boston, an area known as The Commonwealth, and, in typical Fallout fashion, into a story that expands to encompass more than just your personal struggle. You’ll deal with familiar groups, including the technology-obsessed Brotherhood of Steel, as well as new entities, like the mysterious and feared Institute. You’ll engage in massive, multi-faction battles and travel to a literal radioactive sea. In most games, this kind of epic quest is an assumed part of the genre, even if it’s not exactly believable or motivated. But in Fallout 4 it makes total sense: who wouldn’t travel to the end of the world to save their child?

Initially Boston doesn’t feel all that distinct from previous locations, like Fallout 3’s Washington, DC. It’s styled in brown and grey, sewn with burned out cars across crumbling highways. If you venture into an abandoned shop, you can bet it’s filled with zombie-like ghouls and lots of useless clutter. The city’s currency is, as always, discarded Nuka-Cola bottle caps. But Boston is also a great place for Fallout to revel in its own particular brand of Americana. It may be a few centuries (and nuclear bombs) later, but the passion for baseball hasn’t died, and the region’s biggest settlement can be found in the remnants of Fenway Park. Security guards are dressed up like umpires crossed with Mad Max, and the Green Monster helps save lives. Mercifully, serious Boston accents are few and far between.
Like the repurposed ballpark, Fallout 4 builds upon the familiar to create something new and strange. Chief among these new elements is the hardboiled detective vibe: one early line of quests has you partnering with a stereotypical gumshoe named Nick Valentine in the search for your son. These were some of my favorite parts of the game. Most Fallout quests are primarily about going somewhere and killing a bunch of people (or monsters), but the detective element is a welcome change to the familiar format. Similarly, Fallout 4’s narrative has a strong emphasis on synths, human-like androids that were only briefly touched on in past games. Their inclusion raises some expected but still fascinating questions about what constitutes life and sentience, things that will feel familiar to Blade Runner fans.
Neither of these additions are especially original on their own, but feel fresh within Fallout. They also help contribute to arguably the best story in the series to date. One moment you’re decorating a small home in the corner of the suburbs, the next you’re making decisions that will impact what remains of the world. The Fallout games always give you the option to align with particular interests, whether it’s a technologically advanced squad like the Brotherhood or the mysterious Railroad, but it feels more pronounced and important here. I spent most of Fallout 4 trying to play it safe, working with all sides, but as the climax approached I was forced to pick a side, and I genuinely struggled with my choice. This is Fallout, so it’s never really clear who is good and who is bad, and no matter what you’re forced to betray someone.

Fallout 4
Of course the main story of a Fallout game is just the beginning of its adventure. Players will spend dozens if not hundreds of hours discovering what else the wasteland has to offer. Fallout 4 plays a lot like its predecessors, blending elements of FPS and RPGs into something that’s not quite either. You explore the world from a first-person perspective (you can switch to third person, but I wouldn’t recommend it) and attack as you would in any other shooter. But the returning VATS system also affords the option to play Fallout 4 like a pseudo turn-based game. VATS slows time, so that you can zoom in on enemies and determine the best shot to take. Your ability to do this is limited, and recharges over time, but it’s really the best way to play since Fallout isn’t the most capable shooter, with its frustrating aiming. The poor feel of shooting is most obvious when facing a swell of enemies without enough VATS points to guide your shots.
For the most part, the moment-to-moment action is very similar to Fallout 3 and New Vegas. You’ll wander the wasteland discovering new locations, and split your time between fighting, talking to other characters, and customizing your own. The streamlined perk system works well and simplifies character creation. I began by focusing on my character’s charisma, which let me talk my way out of a lot of sticky situations; as someone who isn’t so into the combat, this was the perfect solution. Later on I beefed up my battle skills in preparation for some big final scrimmages.
This familiarity largely benefits the game — Fallout is beloved for a reason — but it can also make it feel frustratingly dated at times. This is particularly true with the quests. Generally interesting from a narrative perspective, a quest’s action is often predictable and repetitive:

  • Go to a location
  • Kill monsters
  • Collect an item
  • Return home
After a while killing feral ghouls switched from scary to annoying. Occasionally the game puts an interesting twist on this structure — one highlight has you travelling through a life’s worth of memories from a dead raider — but those moments are rare, and so the quests can often feel like a list of chores more than anything else. It’s better than in past Fallout games, but in comparison to recent RPGs like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it can feel archaic.
One of the more refreshing changes is a focus on companion characters. Hardly new for the series, companions feel more robust and interesting than in games past. I rarely traveled alone. If you’ve seen the trailers, you know that you can have a dog or robotic assistant accompany you through The Commonwealth, but you can also partner up with other humans. There are a lot of them (though only one can be with you at a time), and they make the game a lot more interesting. Not only do they help mechanically — they provide an extra gun and can hold items for you — but they add narrative depth. I spent most of the game with a reporter named Piper, and she would often act autonomously; as I walked around the city buying new gear and supplies, she would venture off and start interviewing people for a story. Companions will also react to your decisions, and I found myself making different choices because I didn’t want to disappoint her.
Unfortunately, the companions are also indicative of some of Fallout 4’s biggest problems. It’s a huge, complicated game, but it often feels like an experience built upon a brittle, aging foundation. I ran into numerous technical problems, from the mundane (characters talking over one another during dialogue sequences) to the game breaking (at one point I loaded a save and my character was unable to move at all; another time I couldn’t bring up the menu). People would block a door so that I couldn’t leave a building, and sometimes a character I needed to talk to would refuse to speak to me. I was able to get around all of these issues by restarting the game — I’d recommend saving often to avoid losing progress — but that might not be the case for everyone.

The companions, more than any other feature, suffered from these technical problems. During one early sequence, I had to follow a dog who was tracking someone’s scent, and he continually got stuck on trees and rocks, and at one point wouldn’t progress because he was distracted by a flying mutant bug that was too high for him to attack. I managed get him back on the trail after I spotted the tiny bug high up in the air, and shot it out of the sky. Other times, companions refused to follow me into battle, yet mysteriously showed up minutes later when I took an elevator to a different section of the level.
These moments really break the illusion that you’re travelling with something other than a video game AI. The companions also show the limits of what the game can do. They both add to the game’s realism, and take away from it. Over the course of the game my character and Piper ended up falling in love, yet when I took another character out on a date, I found Piper waiting outside of the hotel room the next morning. When I asked how she felt about our relationship, she gushed that she was on cloud nine, the happiest she’s ever been.
The other changes to Fallout are welcome add-ons rather than huge shifts. Take the new crafting feature, for instance. In certain areas you can break down old furniture, cars, and houses, and use those resources to craft more useful items and structures. I spent a few hours helping a settlement by making beds and water purifiers, and then keeping them protected with the addition of some well-placed machine gun turrets. It was a surprisingly satisfying diversion, and as I traveled throughout the game I was able to convince friends to join the growing community. But it’s also something that you can completely ignore if you want to. More useful is the crafting of weapons and food, which really makes you feel like a proper scavenger. Instead of eating a piece of raw, radioactive bear meat to heal, you can turn it into a tasty steak.
People often complain about new games not being innovative enough. More than any other medium, games are judged on their ability to do something totally new, to take what past games did and make them even bigger and better. Fallout 4 doesn’t feel particularly innovative. It introduces a few new features, ones that don’t change it all that much, and it retains many of the same problems as past games in the series, most noticeably the frustrating and consistent technical problems.
But it’s still very much Fallout — a game that doesn’t really need to change all that much to trigger that familiar mix of dread and joy. A new location and a much better story were enough to pull me into this world, and 60 hours later I’m not done with it. There are settlements I still want to finish building, and crimes I still need to get to the bottom of. At some point I plan to ignore everything altogether, and just wander into the wilderness to see what I can find. Even if I’m alone, at least I’ll have Billie Holiday’s voice to keep me company.
